    初期發展 / Early growth

    首次提出設立天文台 / First proposal for an observatory

    香港天文台：量地官約翰‧派斯 1877 年向港府提出設立天文台，主要目的為航海界提供準確授時服務；1879 年英國皇家學會另向殖民地部建議設台，認為香港是研究氣象尤其颱風的理想地點。

    Hong Kong Observatory: Surveyor General John Price proposed an observatory in 1877, chiefly to give mariners an accurate time service; in 1879 the Royal Society separately proposed one to the Colonial Office, judging Hong Kong ideal for meteorological study, especially typhoons.

    加入萬國郵政聯盟 / Joining the Universal Postal Union

    香港郵政：香港 1877 年加入萬國郵政聯盟；1879 年起，由香港寄往任何成員國的郵件一律收取郵費十仙，較過往便宜六仙。

    Hongkong Post: Hong Kong joined the Universal Postal Union in 1877; from 1879 mail to any member country cost a flat ten cents, six cents less than before.
