Dennis Law Sau-yiu, whose family came from Chaozhou, Guangdong, was born in Hong Kong and works as a film producer, director and screenwriter. His father founded Yue Tai Hing Limited in 1966, a business centred on property sales, including buying land for development and acquiring old buildings for redevelopment. Law studied film at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles; after returning to Hong Kong he first served as managing director of Yue Tai Hing before moving into film. He was formerly chairman of Milkyway Image, the forerunner of One Cool Group, and founded its subsidiary Point of View Movie Production Co. Ltd, and he is an executive director of the Yue Tai Hing Group. In 2005 he produced Johnnie To's Election and made his directorial debut the same year with The Unusual Youth, a coming-of-age story; he later produced Election 2. In 2006 he directed the youth romance Love at First Note, and in the same year Election won Best Film at the 25th Hong Kong Film Awards. He also directed a number of action films himself, including Fatal Contact (2006), Fatal Move (2008), Bad Blood, The Tattooist and Vampire Warriors, with subjects often drawn from the triad world, violence and the supernatural, and a hard-edged style with steady output; in 2013 he directed The Constable. His work both extends Milkyway Image's triad and crime strand and adds ferocious action and supernatural elements, and he is one of the few Hong Kong directors who combine a business background with hands-on filmmaking experience.
