  A Hong Kong tour group was taken hostage in Manila, with Hong Kong residents killed and injured. The Secretary for Security later told the Legislative Council that eight Hong Kong people were shot dead and several others injured, some needing continued surgery and follow-up treatment. In 2014 the Hong Kong SAR Government and the Philippine Government issued a joint statement covering apology, compensation, sanctions against those responsible and measures to protect travellers.
