Tung Yun-wai (born 6 February 1958), better known by his stage name Tung Wai and in English as Stephen Tung Wai, is one of Hong Kong's foremost action choreographers, as well as an actor and director. Of Ningbo ancestry and born in Shanghai, he moved to Hong Kong as a small child, where his grandfather enrolled him at the Chun Chau drama school to study Peking opera under Fan Juhua; he became skilled in northern-style martial arts and also learned Wing Chun, and, being the youngest pupil, was nicknamed 'Ah Dee'. He entered films in 1965 in The Seventh Soldier, and from the age of sixteen worked as a stuntman and double before moving to Taiwan, where he quickly rose to martial-arts director. In 1981 he joined TVB, winning wide popularity as Fong Sai-yuk in The Young Heroes and starring in such series as The Theatre Kids and The Boat People. Leaving television in 1984, he worked across Hong Kong and Taiwan as an action director and occasional actor, and at one point formed a production company with Cheung Tung-cho. His directorial credits include Magic Cop, The Case of the Cold Fish, Hitman and Red Wolf. Insisting that action and story be one, Tung has been nominated seventeen times for Best Action Choreography at the Hong Kong Film Awards and won seven times, for Downtown Torpedoes, Purple Storm, The Accidental Spy, Bodyguards and Assassins, Kung Fu Jungle, Operation Mekong and Bursting Point, and has twice taken the Golden Horse award for action design, for Purple Storm and Seven Swords. In 2024 he starred in Stuntman, his first leading role since Pom Pom and Hot Hot in 1992.
