Barbara Pui Chan is a professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and holds the Au Chik Ko and Au Leung Shook Yin Professorship in Biomedical Engineering. All of her degrees are from CUHK: she took a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and then a PhD in surgical science, a path that moved from basic biochemistry into surgical research. After her doctorate she held a postdoctoral fellowship in laser medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States, working where laser technology meets living tissue. From 2003 she served on the biomedical engineering programme at the University of Hong Kong, accumulating nearly two decades of teaching and research there, and in 2023 she moved to CUHK, where she is attached to the School of Biomedical Sciences, the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Institute of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. Her work sits where biomedical engineering meets tissue regeneration, combining laser techniques, biomaterials and surgical application.
Chan moved from biochemistry and surgical science to laser medicine and then to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine; after nearly two decades at HKU she returned to CUHK, bringing clinically oriented biomedical engineering experience into the department.
