Chun Chen is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He took bachelor's and master's degrees in building science at Tsinghua University in 2009 and 2012, then moved to Purdue University's School of Mechanical Engineering for a PhD completed in 2015. After graduating he was a visiting assistant professor at Purdue, and in August 2016 he joined CUHK as an assistant professor, later becoming an associate professor. His research covers indoor air quality, energy-efficient buildings, aerosol dynamics and the transmission of airborne infectious disease. The field joins building science with mechanical engineering: indoor air quality concerns ventilation and pollutant concentration, while aerosol research explains how viruses travel on particles through a space, with direct relevance to public-health policy.
Chen links building ventilation with infectious-disease transmission, a practical question where public health meets engineering; his training runs from building science at Tsinghua to mechanical engineering at Purdue.
