Fei Chen is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He took a bachelor's degree in computer science at Xi'an Jiaotong University in 2006, a master's degree in computer science at the Harbin Institute of Technology in 2008 and a doctoral degree in robotics from Nagoya University's Fukuda Laboratory in 2012. Before joining CUHK he was a researcher and the founder of the Active Perception and Robot Interactive Learning Laboratory at the Italian Institute of Technology. He now leads the Collaborative and Versatile Robots Laboratory within the department and works with the CUHK T-Stone Robotics Institute. He has been principal investigator of several European Union and Italian national projects, including EU FP7 AutoMAP, the H2020 FET Chist-Era projects Learn-Real, VINUM and Learn-Assist, as well as Hong Kong Research Grants Council and Innovation and Technology Commission projects. His main research interest lies in robotic mobile manipulation, grasping and manipulation, and human-robot collaboration. He is a senior member of the IEEE, co-chairs the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society technical committee on neuro-robotics systems, and serves as an associate editor for several international journals.
Chen brought European work on mobile manipulation and human-robot collaboration to Hong Kong, linking CUHK's robotics institute with medical-robotics platforms and moving the research from laboratory demonstrations towards surgical and service settings.
