Hongkai Chen is a research assistant professor in the Department of Information Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He completed a PhD in electrical engineering at Stony Brook University, having earlier taken a bachelor's degree at Nanjing University and a master's degree at Washington University in St. Louis, so his training spans both China and the United States. His research sits at the meeting point of several fields: AI for health, embedded AI, cyber-physical systems, the Internet of Things, ubiquitous computing, wireless systems and formal methods. His main objective is to design intelligent and reliable systems for smart health and smart cities. Beyond applied work he is interested in computing theory, especially temporal logic and verification — tools for proving that a system's behaviour meets its specification, which matter for safety-related uses such as medical devices and city infrastructure.
Chen brings artificial intelligence and formal verification together: the first handles perception and decisions, the second proves that the system cannot go wrong, and the combination answers the reliability demands of smart health and smart cities.
