Shing Shin Cheng is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He took a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at Johns Hopkins University in 2013 and a PhD in robotics at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2018, joining CUHK as an assistant professor in August that year and later being promoted to associate professor. His research covers flexible surgical robotics, image-guided surgical systems, medical devices, smart actuators and artificial intelligence in medicine, running from mechanical design to clinical imaging and intelligent control. The work has appeared in IEEE Transactions on Robotics, the Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures, the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation and the International Symposium on Robotics Research.
Cheng combines flexible robotic structures with surgical imaging so that minimally invasive instruments become more dexterous and easier to control — work that spans materials, mechanical design and medical imaging in a typical interdisciplinary medical-robotics effort.
