Xiangyu Chu is a research assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He took a bachelor's degree in automation at the Harbin Institute of Technology in 2015 and a master's degree in control science and engineering there in 2017, then completed a PhD in mechanical and automation engineering at CUHK in 2021. During his studies he was a visiting student at Carnegie Mellon University in 2020, and from July 2023 to January 2024 he visited the Chair for Computer Aided Medical Procedures and Augmented Reality at the Technical University of Munich. Before rejoining CUHK in 2024 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center under InnoHK. His research runs in three directions: robotic surgical and medical systems with their algorithms; fine manipulation skills for deformable objects and their use in surgery and services; and agile locomotion systems, their algorithms and their application in biomechanics.
Chu's work applies robotic manipulation to surgical and service settings, with deformable objects at its centre; his research path through Pittsburgh, Munich and Hong Kong also reflects how local medical-robotics work connects with international laboratories.
