Fong Hon Chong, a native of Fuhecheng in Shantou, Guangdong, joined an amateur department-store troupe in Shantou at sixteen to study Teochew opera as a young female lead, performing traditional pieces such as Picking Up the Jade Bracelet and Zhao Kuangyin as well as new modern plays both in the city and in the countryside. She came to Hong Kong in March 1959 and at once joined the Sun Tin Choi Teochew opera troupe, at first mostly performing ceremonial Yu Lan festival shows; as the troupe moved into film she appeared under the stage name Fong Kwai in Stepmother (1960) and A Loyal Martyr (1961), and under her own name in films such as Lu Lin Hui (1960), Sweeping the Window (1961), Xue Gang's Revolt (1962) and Mu Guiying Accepts a Suitor (1962), appearing in more than forty Chaozhou-dialect pictures in all. She was best known for villains: a treacherous imperial consort in Judge Bao Meets Empress Li (1961), a wanton nun in The Phoenix Hairpin (1961), the scheming Empress Lu in Liu Zhang Descends the Mountain (1962) and a cruel mother-in-law in The Peacock Flies Southeast (1962), as well as hard-hearted stepmothers in two 1965 films; she occasionally played frail victims as well, such as in the 1962 and 1966 pictures. From 1966 she toured Thailand and Singapore with the Sun Tin Choi and Sing Ngai troupes and in the 1990s travelled to the United States with the Hong Kong Chor Wai troupe. She has long since retired and lives in Hong Kong. Moving from ceremonial opera stages into Chaozhou-dialect cinema, she built a strong gallery of villain roles and became an important supporting player of the era.

Fong Hon Chong moved from ceremonial opera stages into Chaozhou-dialect films, building strong villain roles across more than forty pictures as a key supporting player in the Sun Tin Choi troupe's films. Her later tours of Thailand, Singapore and the United States show how Teochew opera and film circulated among overseas Teochew communities.
