Qiguang He is an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, joining in 2023. He took a bachelor's degree at Tsinghua University in 2015, master's (2016) and doctoral (2021) degrees at the University of California, San Diego, and was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania from 2021 to 2023. His research focuses on the design and fabrication of soft robots, actuating materials, mechanical metamaterials and mechanical intelligence. Soft robots replace rigid joints with compliant materials, actuating materials are what make the material itself bend, contract or change shape, and mechanical metamaterials use microstructural design to obtain unusual mechanical properties. The departmental page does not list individual papers, so this entry follows the record of degrees, posts and research fields given there.
He works on soft robotics and mechanical metamaterials, a direction in mechanical engineering where materials replace mechanisms: the material's own ability to deform produces motions that rigid mechanisms find hard to achieve.
