Alex Siu Hong Lau is a lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He took a master's degree in engineering with first-class honours at Imperial College London in 2006 and a PhD in computational aeroacoustics at the University of Southampton in 2013. From 2013 to 2016 he was a postdoctoral research fellow in Southampton's Aeronautics and Flight Mechanics Research Group, and from 2016 to 2018 he held a similar post in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He then taught part-time in the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and from 2019 to 2023 was a tutor in the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Hong Kong, teaching linear algebra and structural analysis. In 2023 he joined CUHK as a lecturer. His research interests are animal flight aerodynamics and computational and theoretical aeroacoustics.
Lau's path from Imperial College and Southampton to HKUST in fluid and acoustic research led him towards a teaching-focused post; his years teaching linear algebra and structural analysis at HKU connect the mathematical and structural foundations of engineering.
