Bob Li is an emeritus professor of information engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and co-director of its Institute of Network Coding. He took a bachelor's degree in mathematics at National Taiwan University in 1970 and a PhD in mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1974. He taught applied mathematics at MIT from 1974 to 1976 and mathematics, statistics and computer science at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1976 to 1979. He then spent a decade at Bell Laboratories and Bellcore working on switching systems and related theory, and joined CUHK as a chair professor in 1989, taking part in the development of the information engineering department and network coding research.
Li moved from mathematics into switching-systems research at Bell Laboratories and then to teaching in Hong Kong, linking mathematical theory, the communications industry and local information-engineering education.
