Shuheng Liao is an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He took a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2018 and a PhD in mechanical engineering at Northwestern University in 2023, and before joining CUHK he was a postdoctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research focuses on process design and control for metal additive manufacturing, combining computational modelling, machine learning and in-situ process monitoring so that the printing process becomes more controllable and the output more consistent. He has received the Belytschko Outstanding Research Award for the best doctoral thesis in mechanical engineering at Northwestern, and best paper awards at the International Symposium on Flexible Automation and the North American Manufacturing Research Conference.
Liao works on the central difficulty of metal 3D printing — making it reliable — by combining computational models, machine learning and real-time monitoring so that process parameters can be adjusted to actual conditions, an applied line of research in smart manufacturing.
