Xiaohua Liu is a research assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Between 2008 and 2015 she studied at Yanshan University, taking first a bachelor's degree in mechanical design, manufacturing and automation and then a master's degree in mechanical design and theory, and in 2019 she completed a PhD in mechanical engineering at the Beijing Institute of Technology. During her doctoral studies she received research training at The Ohio State University from 2016 to 2018 under Professor Allen Yi. After graduating she was a postdoctoral fellow at Shenzhen University, moved to Shenzhen Technology University as an assistant professor in 2022, and later joined CUHK. Her work sits within precision engineering, with a focus on high-precision, high-volume optical fabrication — freeform and micro-optics, micro-lapping and polishing processes, and wearable flexible electronic sensors. Her current interests are the compression moulding of glass optics and the injection moulding of high-precision polymer optics. She has published more than twenty refereed journal papers and holds three patents in China.
Liu's research addresses the process problems that stand between optical components and volume production — freeform fabrication, micro-lapping and polishing, glass compression moulding and polymer injection moulding — each a key step in turning precision optics into manufactured products.
