Yunhui Liu is the Choh-Ming Li Professor of Mechanical and Automation Engineering in CUHK's Faculty of Engineering, and serves as director of the CUHK T Stone Robotics Institute and of the Hong Kong Centre for Logistics Robotics. He took a bachelor's degree in applied dynamics at the Beijing Institute of Technology in 1985, a master's degree in mechanical engineering at Osaka University in 1989 and a PhD in mathematical engineering and information physics at the University of Tokyo in 1992. After his doctorate he was a research scientist at the Electrotechnical Laboratory of Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry, taking part in several large Japanese national projects on intelligent robots and machine learning. He joined The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1995, was promoted to professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering in 2002, and has since led both the university's robotics institute and its logistics robotics centre.
Liu moved from Japanese national intelligent-robot projects to Hong Kong and has long led CUHK's robotics institute and logistics robotics centre, helping take local robotics research from the laboratory into logistics operations.
