Yi-Chun Lu is a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She took a bachelor's degree in materials science and engineering at National Tsing Hua University in 2007 and a PhD in the same field at MIT in 2012, her training centred on materials science throughout. She joined CUHK as an assistant professor in 2013, was promoted to associate professor in 2018 and to professor in 2022. Her research sits within energy materials, covering batteries and electrochemical energy storage; a materials-science background lets her start from material structure and interfacial reactions when explaining the performance limits of storage devices. She teaches in the department and supervises research students, with both teaching and research centred on energy-related materials.
Lu's path runs from materials science at Tsing Hua through a MIT doctorate to a CUHK professorship; her energy-materials work bears directly on battery technology, making it application-oriented basic research.
