Born Chan Man-keung in Hong Kong to a Taishan family, Nancy Chan moved to Guangzhou as a child, studied at the Guangzhou Girls' Normal School and trained in Mandarin, Peking, Kunqu and Cantonese opera under Yik Kim-chuen, who gave her the stage name Chen Yunshang, drawn from a Li Bai poem. A basic player at Guangzhou Sound Film Company, she returned to Hong Kong in 1936 to promote The Dream in the Tang Palace and stayed after starring in So Yat's The New Youth. Her beauty and natural acting made her a leading Cantonese star of the pre-war years, in lavish productions such as Twelve Golden Hairpins (1937) and opposite Ma Si-tsang in The Prince of Thieves (1939), as well as wartime pictures such as Blood-Stained Treasure Mountain City (1938) and Hua Mulan (1939). Invited to Shanghai by Zhang Shankun, she became a national star with Mulan Joins the Army (1939), which ran for more than three months, and was crowned one of China's film queens for three consecutive years from 1939. She married Dr Hans Tang in 1943 and retired, returning briefly in 1952 to repay Zhang's patronage before retiring for good. She died in Hong Kong on 30 June 2016.

Nancy Chan moved from Hong Kong Cantonese cinema to the Shanghai Mandarin industry and was one of the most bankable stars of the 1930s and 40s. Her Mulan Joins the Army answered the war through historical allegory, making the national heroine a key figure of wartime cinema. She was among the few actors equally celebrated in both Cantonese and Shanghai films.
