Ng Kwan-lai was born Ng Yin-wan in Shanghai on 11 January 1934 to a family from Zhongshan, Guangdong, and moved to Hong Kong with her family in 1952. In 1953 she became a pupil of the male dan Chan Fei-nung at his Hong Kong Cantonese Opera Academy, and she made her stage debut in 1954. Her first film, The Model and the Car, came in 1955, the same year she signed with the newly formed Oriental Film Company, and she appeared with Sun Ma Sze-tsang and Yam Kim-fai in films such as Zhuge Liang Angers Zhou Yu Thrice (1956), Jing Ke Assassinates the First Emperor of Qin (1956) and Blood Stains the Palace of Chu (1956). In May 1956 she founded the Lai Sing Opera Troupe as principal female lead, making her name with the martial-dan role in Liang Hongyu Beats the Drums to Repel the Jin Army and widening her range to quiet and demure roles; her good looks and sweet voice earned her the nickname 'the jade-throated dan', and she was one of the 'Eight Peonies' of Cantonese opera, sworn sister of Tang Pik-wan, Fung Wong-nui, Law Yim-hing and others, being the 'White Peony'. As Cantonese opera films flourished, Lai Sing's stage hits such as The Scented Gauze Grave (1957), Two Immortals at the Pavilion of the Moon (1958) and The White Rabbit Reunion (1959) were adapted for the screen with her starring. From 1960 she was the leading actress of Grand Film Company, appearing with Yam Kim-fai in films including Teaching the Son to Defy the Emperor (1960) and Lan Zhen's Riot at the Yan Mansion (1962), while her contemporary dramas often paired her with Wu Fung. She also formed the New Lai Sing company, producing three of her own pictures, and in the late 1960s she starred with Lam Ka-sing in works such as The Lovers' Quarrel in the Palace (1967); her final screen appearances came in 1967. In the 1970s she joined Lam Ka-sing's Chung Sun Sing troupe, and in 1976 made a 26-episode Cantonese-opera series with him for Rediffusion Television, leaving a filmed record of their art. She retired from the opera stage in 1991 and in 2008 appeared for a year in the TVB sitcom Off Pedder. She died in Hong Kong on 26 September 2018.

Her martial-dan roles such as Liang Hongyu brought Peking-style acrobatics into Cantonese opera's female lead repertoire, and she moved easily between quiet and demure parts. The Lai Sing troupe's stage hits were adapted into opera films, while the 1976 television series she made with Lam Ka-sing left a rare moving-image record of her stagecraft.
