Wanli Ouyang is a professor in the Department of Information Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and a Global STEM Scholar. He took his PhD in the Department of Electronic Engineering at CUHK and has long worked on computer vision. His teams took first place in the 2016 ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge and again in the 2018 COCO object detection challenge — two of the field's most closely watched public benchmarks. He has also received a Future Fellowship from the Australian Research Council and the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Research from the University of Sydney. In academic service he has been an associate editor of IEEE TPAMI, the International Journal of Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, and a senior area chair of CVPR.
Ouyang's work centres on computer vision, with public benchmark results and journal editorship giving it international visibility; since returning to Hong Kong he has brought competition-grade techniques into local information-engineering research.
