Patsy Kar Ling, born Ho Ying (also known as Ho Pui-ying) in Guangzhou in 1936 to a family from Nanhai, Guangdong, took the name Ho Kar-ling at school. Fearing the war, her family fled to Hong Kong and later returned to the mainland before settling in Hong Kong again in the late 1940s. She left secondary school without finishing. In 1953 she passed the acting course at Lan Kwong Film Company, but as the studio mainly made Mandarin films she moved to Dihua Film Company, where her first film was The Strange Case of Three Wives (1955). When Kong Ngee was founded in 1955 - set up by the Singapore-based Cathay Organisation to make Cantonese films - she joined it, took the stage name Kar Ling and starred in Emergency 999 (1956), becoming a star of the 1950s and 1960s with a distinctive modern look, and the actress most often paired on screen with Patrick Tse in such films as Emergency 999, The Wife Chaser and Playboy. Elegant on screen, she appeared in The Posthumous Child (1956), Autumn Leaves (1960), Flower in the Rain (1960), The Wife Chaser (1961), and later in Lung Kong's social-realist Story of a Discharged Prisoner (1967) as a counsellor of released prisoners. Her films were mostly urban, contemporary dramas, with only a few period martial-arts pictures. In 1961 she formed Brothers Film Company with Chan Man and Patrick Tse, appearing in its first release Vows of Love (1961). She married a Thai-Chinese businessman in 1963, continued acting as a freelancer, ran a fashion shop and retired in 1967, later moving to Thailand. She died in her sleep at home in Thailand on 21 November 2022.

As a leading actress of Kong Ngee in the 1950s and 1960s, Patsy Kar Ling brought an elegant, urbane image to films such as Emergency 999 and The Wife Chaser, shaping the fashionable face of Hong Kong womanhood on screen. Her range covered romance, melodrama and thrillers, and she played a discharged-prisoners' counsellor in Lung Kong's Story of a Discharged Prisoner (1967) before retiring to Thailand.
