The actress known as Pearl of the Orient, born Yeung Wai-ying and a native of Chaozhou in Guangdong, was the younger sister of the veteran actor Bai Yun, who appeared in more than a hundred films across Shanghai and Hong Kong in the 1930s and 1940s. She entered films in the late 1940s under the stage name Pak Wa, appearing in the Cantonese picture The Story of Reincarnation (1948) and Mandarin films such as Paradise of Splendour (1949) and The Swordsman's Revenge (1949). Renaming herself Pearl of the Orient, she became a leading lady of Amoy-dialect (Hokkien) cinema, made in Hong Kong and spoken in the Amoy dialect for markets in Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Her films include The New Pipa Story (1952), The Jade Hall of Spring (1953), Black and White Snake and its sequel (1954), Peacocks Fly Southeast (1955), Meng Lijun (1955) and its follow-up The Twin Dragons (1955), most of them opposite her brother Bai Yun. These Amoy-dialect pictures, produced by Hong Kong studios and distributed to Hokkien-speaking communities in Taiwan, Singapore and Malaya, gave the sibling pairing a following across the Nanyang market, though the genre's output declined in the late 1950s. During the same period she also took Mandarin roles including The Hound's Revenge (1953) and The Fairy Descends to Earth (1954). In 1957 she travelled to Taiwan to make the Hokkien-language film Autumn Grievance, released in 1960. Working across Cantonese, Mandarin and Amoy-dialect pictures, she was one of the representative figures of post-war Hong Kong's cross-dialect cinema.
Pearl of the Orient was a representative figure of the golden age of post-war Hong Kong dialect cinema. Best known for Amoy-dialect films but also active in Cantonese and Mandarin pictures, she shows how the local industry served dispersed Chinese communities across Taiwan and Southeast Asia.
