Wei Ren is a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he also directs the energy and environmental engineering programme and serves as assistant dean for research in the Faculty of Engineering. He took bachelor's and master's degrees at Tsinghua University in 2006 and 2008 and a PhD in mechanical engineering at Stanford University in 2013 under Professor Ronald K. Hanson; he then worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Professor Frank K. Tittel's group at Rice University before joining CUHK in August 2014. His research focuses on laser diagnostics, gas sensing, combustion and propulsion, and energy and fuels, with the twin aim of developing new technologies and understanding the underlying physics. He is co-editor of the Springer journal Applied Physics B, a senior member of Optica, and a recipient of the Excellent Young Scientists Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
Ren measures combustion and gases with laser and spectroscopic techniques, a line of work that weighs experiment and theory together; beyond research he directs the department's energy and environmental engineering programme and handles research matters for the engineering faculty.
