Xu Song is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, joining as an assistant professor in 2019 to work on design and manufacturing. He took a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and automation at Tsinghua University in 2006 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in materials engineering at the University of Oxford in 2010. From 2010 to 2012 he worked at Oxford for the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre on stress analysis and numerical simulation, then moved in 2012 to the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology under A*STAR as a scientist and later senior scientist, receiving a best industry project award in 2016 and a best staff presentation award in 2019 during his time there.
Song's path runs from Rolls-Royce's Oxford technology centre through industrial projects at SIMTech in Singapore to teaching at CUHK — from aerospace materials to manufacturing processes and then to teaching and research, keeping the work close to real production needs.
