Tsin Ting, born Kwok Tai-shu, later taking her mother's surname Sit and choosing the stage name Tsin Ting, was born in Chongqing in 1934 to a well-off family with ancestral roots in Luzhou, Sichuan. She came to Hong Kong in 1949 and, after the family fell on hard times, began singing in nightclubs in 1953. Spotted by an assistant of the composer Yao Min, she was introduced to the Pathe label as a backing vocalist and soon won chances to sing film songs, among her earliest being numbers in Li Han-hsiang's The Narcissus (1956). Li then had her dub for Lin Dai in his first Huangmei opera film, Diau Charn (1958), and again in The Kingdom and the Beauty (1959). She went on to sing the songs of many Shaw films, dubbing for Lin Dai and later for Betty Loh Ti in The Love Eterne (1963), a huge success that lifted Huangmei opera films to their peak and earned her the title Queen of Huangmei Melody. She formed a celebrated duet partnership with Ling Bo in films such as The Seven Fairies (1963) and The West Chamber (1965). Shaw's 1960s output carried her voice, leaving enduring hits such as Waiting Foolishly and Song of Tomorrow. She retired briefly in 1972, returned to the stage in 1979, and still held solo concerts, including her Golden 50th Anniversary concert in 2009. She died in Taipei on 20 October 2022.

With her tender phrasing, Tsin Ting gave Huangmei opera films emotion and grace, and her voice-and-image pairing with Lin Dai, Betty Loh Ti and Ling Bo became a key sound memory of 1950s and 1960s Mandarin cinema. She blended the style of Mandarin popular song into Huangmei melody, making the genre easier for audiences to embrace and spreading it across Chinese communities. Her dubbing work also helped mature the division between singing and acting in film production.
