Wong Ka-kui (10 June 1962 – 30 June 1993) was the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist and main songwriter of the Hong Kong rock band Beyond; his younger brother Wong Ka-keung played bass. He grew up in So Uk Estate with many siblings in modest circumstances but was devoted to music, and at seventeen taught himself on an old wooden guitar left behind by a neighbour who moved away; in March 1983 he formed Beyond with Paul Wong, Wong Ka-keung and Yip Sai-wing, winning a Yamaha guitar competition the same year. The band began as an underground act, writing and producing its own music. In 1985 they self-financed an 'Eternal Waiting' concert, and in 1986 self-financed their first album, Goodbye Ideals, a cassette including 'Eternal Waiting', handling songwriting, recording and cover design themselves; the guitarist Lau Chi-yuen joined briefly afterwards. In 1988 the band signed with Cinepoly and broke through with the album Secret Police, which reached platinum sales; his composition 'The Great Earth', with lyrics by Lau Cheuk-fai on homesickness and nation, won a Jade Solid Gold Best Ten Music Award, the band's first award from the electronic media. In 1989 'Truly Love You', composed by him with lyrics by Siu Mei, took both a Top Ten Chinese Gold Song award and a Jade Solid Gold award; in 1990 his song 'Glorious Years' again won a Jade Solid Gold award and a best-lyric prize, its words dealing with the then-imprisoned South African leader Nelson Mandela's struggle for racial equality. In 1991 Beyond gave several sold-out concerts, the 'Live Contact' shows, at the Hong Kong Coliseum and starred in the film Beyond's Diary: Never Say Die; that year he also travelled with the band to Kenya in East Africa, which inspired 'Amani', a song about war and peace. In 1992 the band signed with the Japanese management company Amuse and moved into the Japanese market, and he also wrote songs for films. In 1993 the band released the album Rock and Roll, which included his signature 'Boundless Oceans, Vast Skies', a song about pursuing ideals that became a landmark of Cantonese rock and won a 'My Favourite Local Composition' award at the Ultimate Song Chart Awards. He insisted on original work, and his songs went beyond romance to peace and ideals, setting him apart in a Cantonese scene dominated by love songs. On 24 June that year, while filming a television game show for Fuji TV in Japan, he slipped on a wet stage, fell from a height of more than two metres and landed on the back of his head, sustaining severe injuries; he remained unconscious in Tokyo Women's Medical University Hospital and died on the afternoon of 30 June 1993, aged 31. After his death the band continued as a trio until it formally disbanded in 2005, and his songs have been widely sung ever since.

Wong Ka-kui brought a rock spirit and social conscience into Cantonese pop, writing about ideals, maternal love, peace and racial equality: 'Glorious Years' tells of Nelson Mandela, while 'Boundless Oceans, Vast Skies' became a shared anthem for a generation. He led Beyond from an underground act to the mainstream and into the Japanese market, widening the possibilities of Cantonese rock. When he died accidentally in 1993 at only 31, his songs kept being sung for decades afterwards, and his influence endures.
