Wong Man Lei, originally Wong Man-so and also known as Wong Lan-yan, was born in Hong Kong in 1913 to a Zhongshan family and was nicknamed the 'master of tragedy'. Educated at the Italian Convent School (now Sacred Heart Canossian College) and Belilios Public School, she dreamed of acting from a young age and in 1930 wrote to the Shanghai Jinnan Film Company to offer herself as an actress, entering the industry under the name Wong Man-lai in silent films such as The Burning of White Sparrow Temple. After her contract ended she returned to Hong Kong and joined Lianhua's local studio, appearing in films including The Swan's Cry in the Old Temple and Midnight Shots (both 1932). When Lianhua closed its Hong Kong operation she moved to Grandview Film Company and starred in its sound film Song of Yesterday (1935), followed by titles such as New Youth (1936) and Little Canton (1940). When Hong Kong fell in 1941 she escaped to Macao and then Guangzhouwan, touring with refugee filmmakers before spending three years in Vietnam; after the Japanese surrender she performed in Thailand, Malaya and Singapore to raise money and returned home at the end of 1946. Disturbed by the decline of Cantonese cinema, she helped launch the 'Cantonese Film Cleansing Movement' and later the South China Film Workers Union. In 1952 she co-founded Union Film Enterprise and appeared in many of its productions, including In the Face of Demolition (1953) and Parents' Hearts (1955), as well as such films as The Prodigal Son (1952), Every Family (1954), The Wilderness (1956), Adultery (1958), The Bloodsucking Woman (1962) and The Mad Woman (1964). She retired for health reasons after Father Is Back (1967) and wrote a memoir in 1952. She moved into television in the 1970s and received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 14th Hong Kong Film Awards in 1995, the trophy being delivered to her care home by Chow Yun-fat. She died on 8 April 1998.

Nicknamed the 'master of tragedy', Wong Man Lei was one of the defining actresses of Cantonese cinema's golden age, equally convincing as long-suffering women and fearsome mothers-in-law. She helped organise the 'Cantonese Film Cleansing Movement' and co-founded Union Film Enterprise to raise production standards, and in 1995 received the Hong Kong Film Awards' Lifetime Achievement Award.
