Chaoyu Yang is a research assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, which he joined in 2023. He took a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Science and Technology of China in 2015 and a PhD in the same field there in 2020, and before coming to CUHK he was a postdoctoral researcher in Professor Yuanjin Zhao's group at the Wenzhou Institute of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research centres on microfluidics for the production of novel materials, nature-inspired engineering, droplet dynamics, wettability and microrobots, joining fluid physics with materials manufacturing. The work has appeared in journals including Nature Chemical Engineering, Small, Chemical Engineering Journal, Research, Lab on a Chip, Physics of Fluids, Applied Physics Letters, Materials Chemistry Frontiers and Engineered Regeneration.
Yang uses microfluidics to control droplets and interfaces, then applies that physics to producing new materials and microrobots — work that sits between mechanical engineering and materials science.
