Yeung Fan, a native of Panyu, Guangdong, entered the film industry in the 1950s as a Cantonese film actor, his earliest appearances being in The Satisfactory Wedding and A Bright Future (both 1952), directed by Chun Kim. His breakthrough came as Hung Sin Nui's son in A Mother Remembers (1953), after which he worked for various companies. From 1956 he moved behind the camera as assistant director and screenwriter, often collaborating with director Wong Hang on films such as Madam Mei and Black Cat, the Cat Burglar (both 1956) and Adultery (1958). In 1959 he joined the Kong Ngee Motion Picture Production Company run by Chun Kim as screenwriter and assistant director, and was both assistant director and co-writer on the two-part Blossom in Rainy May (1960). He made his directorial debut in 1961 with Birthday Ceremony for the Chaozhou-dialect Tung Shan Film Co., for which he later directed more than twenty films, including The Riverside Pavilion (1962), Story of the Lute (1963) and the colour production The Jade Fish (1964). Chaozhou-dialect cinema was an important genre for the Teochew communities of Southeast Asia in the 1950s and 1960s, and Tung Shan was one of its leading producers, with Yeung's output at the core of that wave. After Tung Shan stopped making Chaozhou-dialect films he directed many Cantonese opera features for producer Tsang Mo-hei, among them Double Weddings (1965), The Imperial Warrant (1968) and Xiu Niang (1970), starring the former Chaozhou-dialect actresses Chong Suet-kuen and Shek Ling. He directed only occasionally afterwards, including The Young Hero of Shaolin, co-directed with Ngai Hoi-fung in 1984 and shot on location on the Mainland.
Yeung Fan moved from Cantonese film actor to assistant director and screenwriter and then to director, spending years making Chaozhou-dialect opera films for Tung Shan. His output between 1961 and 1964 forms one of the densest clusters of Teochew-dialect cinema in Hong Kong, and he later turned to Cantonese opera films, extending the screen life of two local dialect opera genres.
