Li Zhang is a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and a professor by courtesy in the Department of Surgery. He also directs the joint laboratory of robotics and intelligent systems run by the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and CUHK. Before joining CUHK as an assistant professor in 2012 he worked at the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems at ETH Zurich, first as a postdoctoral fellow and later as a senior scientist and lecturer. His professional standing spans several bodies: he is a Fellow of the IEEE, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association and the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, a member of the Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences, and an Outstanding Fellow of CUHK's Faculty of Engineering. He was appointed a Distinguished Lecturer by the IEEE Nanotechnology Council in both 2020 and 2021, reflecting his position where micro- and nanoscale engineering meets medical robotics.
Zhang connects micro- and nanoscale robotics with surgical application: he teaches in CUHK's engineering faculty, works with clinicians through a courtesy appointment in surgery, and advances cross-border research through the joint laboratory with the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology.
