Huan Zhao is a research assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She studied mechanical design, manufacturing and automation at Chang'an University from 2011 to 2015 for her bachelor's degree, and took master's (2018) and doctoral (2023) degrees in mechanical engineering at Xi'an Jiaotong University. Between February 2022 and August 2023 she visited the University of Manchester and the University of Salford in the United Kingdom, researching human walking dynamics. Her training runs from mechanical design and automation into mechanical engineering research, with doctoral work centred on the dynamics of human movement — a topic tied to robotics, prosthetics and biomechanics. She now teaches and researches in the department.
Zhao's research centres on the dynamics of human walking, with visiting research at two British universities; the field bears directly on prosthetic design, walking aids and robotic gait research.
