Kenneth Tsang, born Tsang Wing-kong in Shanghai on 5 October 1934, came from Jida in Xiangshan, Guangdong (today part of Zhuhai). His great-grandfather on his mother's side was Liang Cheng, the Qing dynasty minister to the United States, and his maternal grandfather, Zheng Huan, was among the second group of Qing students sent abroad; his father was a Vietnamese-Chinese merchant in Shanghai. He first studied at Lingnan School's Shanghai branch, settled in Hong Kong with his family in 1948, studied at Lingnan Middle School and Wah Yan College Kowloon, and later took a degree in architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, practising as an architect in Hong Kong for about three years. He made his screen debut in 1949 in the film Tong Lam Liu, and from the 1960s worked steadily in Hong Kong and Taiwanese film and television. His height, fluent English and piercing gaze suited him to warlords, tycoons and professionals; from 1972 he worked mainly on Mandarin pictures, joined Television Broadcasts in 1982 and, that year, appeared in the series Love Story as Yuen Ting-tsun. His Huang Yaoshi in the 1983 TVB adaptation of The Legend of the Condor Heroes became one of the best-remembered roles on Hong Kong television and made him widely known on the mainland, and he went on to play Xie Xun, Ding Dian and Yue Buqun in further Jin Yong adaptations, as well as appearing in such series as Below the Lion Rock, The Final Verdict and The Greed of Man, and on stage in Deling and Cixi. On film he appeared in John Woo's The Killer and in the Hollywood productions Die Another Day and Memoirs of a Geisha, moving between Cantonese cinema, Mandarin pictures, television and overseas productions over a career that ran from 1949 to 2022. He married three times, first to the actress Lan Di and later to Tang Kung-pik and Chiao Chiao; his sister was the actress Lin Cui and his niece the singer Linda Wong. In 2015 he won Best Supporting Actor at the 34th Hong Kong Film Awards for Overheard 3. He was found dead in his room at the Kowloon Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui, then used as a quarantine hotel, on 27 April 2022, aged 87.

Tsang worked across Hong Kong and Taiwanese film and television and Hollywood productions for more than half a century; his Huang Yaoshi became a classic figure of wuxia drama, while his late performance in Overheard 3 earned him a Hong Kong Film Award and showed the range of his acting.
