Dante Lam, born in 1965, is a Hong Kong film director, producer and screenwriter. He joined Cinema City in the late 1980s and worked his way up from the bottom, later becoming an assistant director under Ringo Lam, from whom he learned to handle large-scale staging; spotted by Gordon Chan in 1989 while working as a production assistant, he was promoted to assistant director and worked on action films including Thunderbolt, First Option and Big Bullet. He began directing on his own in the 1990s; in 1998 he co-directed the crime film Beast Cops with Gordon Chan, which won Best Film and Best Director at the 18th Hong Kong Film Awards. He followed it with Jiang Hu in 2000 and later crime and inspirational films such as The Beast Stalker, The Stool Pigeon and Unbeatable, forging a tough, hard-edged style; The Beast Stalker won Nick Cheung a Hong Kong Film Awards Best Actor title, Unbeatable brought Lam a Best Director nomination at the 33rd Hong Kong Film Awards, and The Demon Within was selected for the Panorama section of the Berlin Film Festival in 2014. In 2016 his Operation Mekong, based on a Chinese police operation on the Mekong River, was a box-office hit. In 2018 he directed Operation Red Sea, set around the Chinese navy's evacuation of civilians, which became that year's top-grossing film in China and won him Best Director at the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards. In 2021 he co-directed The Battle at Lake Changjin with Chen Kaige and Tsui Hark, a film about the Korean War battle at Lake Changjin that broke China's all-time box-office record; in 2022 the three shared Best Director at the 35th Golden Rooster Awards for it. He later directed The Rescue.
Operation Red Sea and The Battle at Lake Changjin successively set Chinese box-office records, making the military action film led by a Hong Kong director a mainstream genre on the mainland; his blend of large-scale action and patriotic subject matter has shaped how similar co-productions are made.
