Liza Wang Ming-chuen was born in Shanghai on 28 August 1947, her family's ancestral home in Jiangsu, and moved to Hong Kong as a child. In 1967 she entered show business through the Rediffusion Artists Training Class, and her early television drama Four Thousand Gold brought her notice. She then joined Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB), where from 1971 she long hosted the variety show Enjoy Yourself Tonight. In the late 1970s and early 1980s she became the station's leading actress: A House Is Not a Home (1977), in which she played the capable Lok-lam, ran to 110 episodes with average ratings of 57 points and was TVB's top-rated series of the year; she followed it with Yesterday's Glitter (1980) and Love and Passion (1982), singing the theme songs, among them the widely sung title tune and the patriotic number The Brave Chinese. She also appeared in martial-arts serials, playing Huo Qingtong in The Book and the Sword (1976) and Zhao Min in The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre (1978), and became a familiar face of TVB costume drama. Beyond television she also took up Cantonese opera, making her first charity appearance in The Six States' Grand Seal for the Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong in 1978 and later training formally. In 1992 she was elected chairman of the association, its first female head, and has repeatedly been returned, presiding over its affairs for more than twenty years and promoting the preservation, transmission and training of new talent in Cantonese opera. She has also worked as an MC and in public service, having served as a member of the National Committee of the CPPCC and of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and has long supported charities such as the Community Chest; later she appeared as Fong Kin-ping in the drama series At the Threshold of an Era and often hosted large TVB shows and anniversary galas. Diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 1985 and again with breast cancer in 2002, she became active in public campaigns after surviving both illnesses. Named one of Hong Kong's Ten Outstanding Young Persons in 1981, the first female artist so honoured, she received the Silver Bauhinia Star in 2004, TVB's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012, the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2022 and the Hong Kong Arts Development Council Life Achievement Award in 2024. She married her Cantonese-opera partner Law Kar-ying in 2009.
From television leading lady to Cantonese-opera figurehead, Liza Wang chaired the Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong for more than two decades, promoting the preservation and transmission of the art form, while the dramas and theme songs she starred in became shared memories for generations of Hongkongers.
