Wilson Yip Wai-shun was born on 23 October 1963 and grew up in Lok Man Estate in Kowloon. He joined Cinema City in 1985, working his way up from messenger and location assistant to continuity man and assistant director, and spent roughly a decade as an assistant director, taking part in more than twenty films. He made his directorial debut in 1995 with '01:00 A.M.' and also directed 'Mysterious Murder' that year, and his 1996 crime film 'Mongkok Story' was picked as a recommended title by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society. He built his name in the late 1990s with horror and crime pictures such as 'Bio-Zombie' (1998) and 'Bullets Over Summer' (1999), the latter winning him Best Screenplay from the Hong Kong Film Critics Society and widely seen as a landmark of the local revival. 'Juliet in Love' (2000) brought his first Best Director nomination at the Hong Kong Film Awards. He went on to direct the romantic comedy 'Dry Wood Fierce Fire' (2002) and the action films 'SPL: Sha Po Lang' (2005), 'Dragon Tiger Gate' (2006) and 'Flash Point' (2007), the last three teaming him with Donnie Yen. In 2008 he and Yen made 'Ip Man', a critical and commercial success that he followed with 'Ip Man 2', 'Ip Man 3' and 'Ip Man 4'. He was nominated for Best Director at the Hong Kong Film Awards six times but never won the prize. In recent years he has turned producer; 'Limbo' (2022) and 'Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In' (2025) both won Best Film at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Wilson Yip is one of the few Hong Kong commercial directors who moves freely between horror, action and drama, and 'Bullets Over Summer' is regarded as a representative work of the late-1990s local revival. The 'Ip Man' series reframed martial-arts cinema around a national hero, turning Donnie Yen into an international action star and fuelling a wave of kung fu films. As a producer he has continued to take part in award-winning titles such as 'Limbo' and 'Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In'.
