Brandy Yuen Chun-yeung is a member of Hong Kong's Yuen Clan stunt team, a nephew of the action director Yuen Siu-tien and a cousin of Yuen Woo-ping, with a martial-arts grounding built up since childhood. In 1973 he already starred in the action film 'She Tou Ren'. He appeared in Jackie Chan's 'Drunken Master' (1978), which Yuen Woo-ping choreographed and in which Yuen Siu-tien played Beggar So; as Yuen Woo-ping moved into directing, Yuen Chun-yeung worked on both sides of the camera with the rest of the clan, appearing from 1979 in films such as 'The Magnificent Butcher', 'The Miracle Fighters' and 'The Taoism Drunkard', handling solid, hard-hitting action with supple movement and doubling work. On 13 October 1983 he turned director with 'The Champions', a football-meets-kung-fu picture produced by Raymond Chow and starring Yuen Biao, Cheung Kwok-keung and Moon Lee, whose action was choreographed by the Yuen Clan; it proved popular and was nominated for Best Action Choreography at the 3rd Hong Kong Film Awards. In 1986 he served as action director on 'Armour of God', co-directed by Jackie Chan and Eric Tsang. On 6 February 1994 he directed a film about Bodhidharma, the first patriarch of Chan Buddhism, starring Derek Yee; during production he studied Buddhist teachings deeply and, after finishing the film, chose to become a monk, taking the dharma name Shi Chuanban and becoming abbot of a Hong Kong temple in the 1990s. He then withdrew from the film industry for a life of quiet practice. Known for solid kung fu and densely packed choreography, the Yuen Clan's work through Yuen Chun-yeung spans the evolution of Hong Kong martial-arts cinema from the 1970s to the 1990s.
Brandy Yuen rose through the Yuen Clan from stuntman and actor to director; 'The Champions' succeeded with its fresh football-meets-kung-fu premise and stands as a good example of the clan working together in front of and behind the camera. After finishing his 1994 film on Bodhidharma he became a monk, taking the dharma name Shi Chuanban and serving as abbot of a Hong Kong temple, a rare example among Hong Kong action performers.
