Derek Chiu Sung-kee is a Hong Kong film director, screenwriter and producer who came out of television. He worked in TV early on, directing the TVB drama Hong Kong Frog Man in 1990 with Wai Hon-to, and later directed TVB series including Hidden Treasures (also known as Golden Egg of Apliu Street) and Angels of Mission. Moving into film, he directed a varied body of work including The Log (1996), And the Two Sides, The Miserable (2002) and Night and Dawn (2007), a Malaysia-China co-production about Sun Yat-sen's revolutionary work in Penang. His 2000 film Comeuppance, produced by Johnnie To and starring Jordan Chan, Sunny Chan and Patrick Tam, depicts urban crime and the fate of ordinary people with a streak of black humour, and he also wrote the screenplay. In 2007 he directed Brothers, starring Andy Lau, Michael Miu and Eason Chan, a project that came about after Kent Cheng introduced Chiu to Andy Lau. In 2017 he produced Wong Chun's Mad World, and in 2018 he directed the black-and-white drama No. 1 Chung Ying Street, which sets 1967 against contemporary Hong Kong and interweaves the predicaments and choices of two generations of young people; it was selected for competition at the Osaka Asian Film Festival and opened in Hong Kong in May that year. Chiu's films often focus on society's marginal figures and the issues of their times, and he frequently writes his own scripts, giving him a distinctive voice among Hong Kong directors.
