Billy Tang Hin-shing (18 June 1951 – 1 July 2020) was a Hong Kong film director known for 'exploitation' pictures that fuse extreme violence with sexual content. He joined Rediffusion Television (later ATV) in 1979 as an assistant director, working on serials such as Reincarnated, Dragon Strikes, Bloodbath on Tai Ping Shan and Sweet Sweet 24, and learned production under directors Lai Tai-wai (who made Nomad) and Lai Shui-ching (later known for the television adaptation of The Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre) before being promoted to director in 1982; he then helmed ATV dramas including The General, Flirting Scholar and Warrant 101, leaving briefly in 1983 amid a reshuffle and moving to Singapore. In 1988 he co-directed Vengeance Is Mine with Lee Chi-ngai, his first feature, a rape-revenge story starring Rosamund Kwan. The following year he made his solo debut with Dragon Fight, shot in San Francisco and starring Jet Li and Stephen Chow — the only time the two stars appeared together on screen. He then specialised in crime subjects, probing the dark side of human nature through graphic brutality that tested the audience's limits, and earned a reputation as the city's leading director of murder films. In 1992 he worked with Danny Lee on Dr. Lamb, drawn from the real serial-killer case of Lam Kor-wan and starring Simon Yam; it performed well at the box office and began the Secret Files series. Other credits include Red to Kill (1994), Brother of Darkness (1994), The Untold Story of the Thirteen Taipans of Tsz Wan Shan (1995), Underground Judgement, Those Were the Days and the prison drama Chinese Midnight Express. Adept at adapting real crimes, he gave his films a strong documentary feel, and at ATV he directed series such as Who's the Winner, Fist of Fury and My Date with a Vampire. From 2000 he shifted to the mainland, mainly making television films and series spanning period martial arts and modern crime stories, remaining active into the 2010s; his final work was the co-produced series Flying Tiger III. His forceful visual staging has long been studied by Hong Kong cult-cinema fans. Billy Tang died of nasopharyngeal carcinoma on 1 July 2020, aged 69.

Working almost entirely in crime and exploitation material, Billy Tang became a defining director of Hong Kong's Category III and cult cinema through his extreme violence, while his documentary-like staging of real crimes preserved a dark side of 1990s Hong Kong society on screen.
