Chapter 1 of the Hong Kong Geology Guide Book (Geotechnical Engineering Office, CEDD; first published June 2007) records that the oldest strata exposed in Hong Kong are the Devonian Bluff Head Formation, cropping out along the northern shore of Tolo Channel from Pak Sha Tau Chau to Bluff Head and also around Ma On Shan on the southern shore. Earth movements tilted the beds to a sub-vertical attitude; the formation is over 800 m thick and carries bivalve, ostracod, placoderm and fern fossils, its lower unit indicating a Lower to Middle Devonian age and its upper unit an Upper Devonian age, with a standard Late Devonian plant fossil also recorded at Ma On Shan. This is an official primary-source milestone, not part of the extracted Chronicles archive; the time label reproduces the source, which names the period only (it gives no million-year dating), and the timeline position exists purely for ordering and is not a dating claim by this site.
