Jiaqing gazetteer, “Villages”: the Guanfu Office’s Hakka-village list (Sha Tau Kok, Ta Kwu Ling, Sheung Shui, Tai Po, Sha Tin, Tsuen Wan, Tsing Yi and Sai Kung)

English

The Jiaqing Xin’an County Gazetteer lists the county’s villages one by one in juan 2, “Villages”, grouped by the office that administered them, with Hakka villages given as a separate appended category — the gazetteer itself explains why: Hakka villages were so numerous under the Jiaqing reign that a category of “Hakka villages under the Guanfu Office” was opened beside the villages of the Guanfu inspectorate, and the archive carries the same explanation. The heading 【官富司管屬客籍村莊 附】 stands in the right half of the upper leaf of page 63 of the scan (the third column to the right of the running head; the scan prints a popular form of the last character, rendered here as 村莊 throughout, and gives 附 in small type beneath the heading): to its right stand the last fourteen names of the indigenous stretch (苦草洞, 清湖墟, 良安田, 白沙澳, 橫塘村, 迢逕村, 謝坑村, 珠園莆, 下步村, 鹽田寨下, 廓下, 絲分村, 大埔村 and 大輞仔) and to its left the first two of the Hakka stretch (莆隔 and 草莆仔). This entry covers the six leaves of pages 63 to 65, counted leaf by leaf: 192 village names — two short of the 194 Hakka villages the archive records under the Guanfu Office, so these six leaves are in effect the whole of that list. Immediately afterwards, on the lower leaf of page 65, the heading “Villages under the Fuyong Office” opens another office’s list (154 indigenous and 31 Hakka villages in the archive’s reckoning). Among the six leaves, the names that can be identified as villages inside Hong Kong today are, grouped by present-day district (all names are given as the scan prints them, with the modern name or a note in brackets): Sha Tau Kok, Ta Kwu Ling and the North District (pages 63 and 64) — 麻雀嶺, 烏石, 萬屋邊, 凹下, 禾坑, 香園, 大坑塘, 九龍塘, 鹽竈下, 南涌圍, 七木橋, 鹿頸, 烏蛟田 (today 烏蛟騰), 荔枝窩, 谷埠 (today 谷埔), 榕樹凹, 鎖腦盤 (today 鎖羅盆), 担水坑, 山嘴, 蓮麻坑 and 牛牯角; Fanling and Sheung Shui (upper leaf of page 64) — 丹竹坑 and 鶴藪; Tai Po (both leaves of page 64) — 碗窰, 社山, 沙螺洞, 大菴, 樟樹灘, 梧桐寨 and 大窩; Tsuen Wan, Kwai Chung and Tsing Yi (lower leaf of page 64) — 城門, 穿龍 (today 川龍), 淺灣 (today 荃灣), 葵涌子 (today 葵涌), 青衣, 油甘頭 (today 油柑頭), 花山 and 響石, with 九肚 in Sha Tin; and Sai Kung (upper leaf of page 63, lower leaf of page 64 and upper leaf of page 65) — 白沙澳, 孟公屋, 井欄樹, 沙角尾, 上洋, 檳榔灣, 爛坭灣, 大灣, 馬油塘 (today 馬游塘), 大腦 and 黃竹山. Many of the remaining names stand in what is Shenzhen or Dongguan today, or have not been checked one by one (among them 大望, 李萌, 大芬, 木古, 丹竹頭, 南嶺子, 蓮塘, 鹽田寨下, 良安田, 清湖墟, 坪山子, 清溪墟 and 莆草洞), and no place is assigned to them; where a name exists on both sides of the border (for instance 沙田, 長沙灣, 大灣, 白芒 and 吉澳) it is dropped rather than guessed, and no village is assigned to an office by this site — the gazetteer gives names only, with no population, area or lineage, and none is supplied here. A further set of names whose glyphs could not be confirmed at high magnification (大輞仔, which appears once on each side of the running head of the same leaf, one of them perhaps the Sai Kung 大網仔; 莆隔, 草莆仔, 樟樹莆, 平洋, 平洋村, 風坑, 馬尿, 烏鑪涌, 茅田子, 逕下, 大林園, 朝陽圍, 新村, 大蟓 (perhaps 大蠔), 橫萌, 東鎮皮圍, 賴屋山, 杯凹, 甲蠔洲, 蔭口 and 蕨嶺) is listed in the known gaps on /coverage and is not cited as a Hong Kong village until checked. The archive sits alongside the reading: it records 194 Hakka and 298 indigenous villages under the Guanfu Office for 1819, and states that “county gazetteer records show at least 86 Hakka villages in Hong Kong, including Lin Ma Hang, Man Uk Pin and Kowloon Tong” — 蓮麻坑 (upper leaf of page 63) and 萬屋邊 with 九龍塘 (lower leaf of page 63) all stand on these six leaves, so the gazetteer behind that archive statement is the text read here. Other names matched one by one: 麻雀嶺 (the archive’s 1668 entry on garrisons placed at Tapu Tau, 麻雀嶺, 獅子嶺 and Tuen Mun, and its 1682 entry adding the 輞井, Kowloon, Tapu Tau and Ma Tseuk Leng stations), 鹿頸, 禾坑, 谷埔 and 蓮麻坑 (the 1899 five- and seven-sub-alliance lists for the Sha Tau Kok main alliance), 碗窰 (the Tai Po 碗窰 village of 1368 and the Fan Sin temple at Upper Wun Yiu in 1790), 梧桐寨 (a Tai Po village founded in 1719), 大菴 (the Tai Po Lam Tsuen fung shui wood), 鶴藪 (the Fanling valley wood), 城門 (the Zheng family settling at Tsuen Wan’s Shing Mun Wai in 1680, and the Tuen Mun station’s 1821 sub-stations, which include 蕉逕, Tapu Tau and 城門凹 — the same leaf also carrying 蕉逕), 穿龍 (the 1730 founding year of Tsuen Wan’s 古坑, 川龍 and 柴灣角 villages), 淺灣 (the Song court moving from Guanfu Chang to 淺灣 in 1277, and the five clans building 淺灣圍, today’s Tsuen Wan Old Wai, between 1723 and 1735), 油甘頭 (Tsuen Wan’s 油柑頭 village, founded in 1685), 青衣 (the 1533 sea fight off 春花洋 by today’s Tsing Yi and the 1596 entry on Tsing Yi Island), 井欄樹 (a 1951 jiao held at the Sai Kung village), 沙角尾 (the demolition of Sai Kung’s 沙角尾 temporary housing area in 2001, Hong Kong’s last), 上洋 and 孟公屋 (the 1955 list of six Sai Kung villages), 烏蛟騰 (gazetted as a plantation care area in 1913), 荔枝窩 (its 1950s heyday), 鎖羅盆 (a Hakka New Year’s Eve custom), 白沙澳 (a historic settlement in relatively good repair) and 九肚 (the 1997 Sha Tin landslide). Archive entries later than 1819 are all marked as later development.
