The Jiaqing 24 (1819) edition of the Xin’an County Gazetteer lists its villages one by one in juan 2 and groups them by the office or district that administered them. Page 63 of the scan carries the heading “Hakka villages under the Guanfu Office, appended”, with the Hakka villages listed beneath it; other columns on the same leaf and juan carry further names, several of which match villages of present-day north-east Hong Kong around Sha Tau Kok, and the two leaves immediately before it (page 62 of the scan, running head “juan 2, Villages”, folios 5 and 6) hold the indigenous village list of the same office (see the separate entry). This content fact was read by hand from the public-domain scan and sits alongside the Chronicles archive, which records that the Jiaqing gazetteer created a separate “Hakka villages under the Guanfu Office” category beside the villages of the Guanfu patrol office, that the list runs to 194 entries, and that in 1819 the office administered 298 indigenous and 194 Hakka villages, about 300 of them on Hong Kong soil today. The list covers the whole county as it stood in 1819 — today’s Hong Kong and Shenzhen — and identical village names exist on both sides, so this site never maps them one by one onto Hong Kong villages.
