English

The incense-tree entry in juan 3 (“Radiations of the Earth”, part 2), section “Products”, of the Jiaqing 24 (1819) Xin’an County Gazetteer, read by hand in full from the left half of the upper block of page 73 (centre column: “Xin’an County Gazetteer, juan 3, Products”, folio nine; after the closing single-character column “reverence” comes the heading of the bamboo section): “The incense tree is much planted within the county. On the eastern route those of Lek Yuen and Sha Lo Wan and other places are the best; on the western route those of Yuen Village and Lei Chung Leng and other places are the best. Its leaves resemble the box; it does not fall in freezing weather. Its seeds are like those of the forsythia but black, and falling to the ground they grow; picked by hand, they do not. The fragrance gathers with time and grows stronger. The main trunk is white agarwood; the part a foot or so above the ground is the incense head, which must be cut only after a dozen years or more, in horse-tooth shapes, and is commonly called tooth incense. In every incense-growing household the women secretly take the best pieces and hide them, calling them daughter incense, and at the festivals they offer them to the gods in this way as their reverence.” Points: (1) by 1819 the tree was already “much planted within the county” — cultivation, not merely gathering wild trees; (2) production is split between an eastern route (Lek Yuen, today’s Sha Tin, and Sha Lo Wan on western Lantau) and a western route (Yuen Village and Lei Chung Leng); (3) the aromatic part is named precisely — “the main trunk is white agarwood”, not leaf, fruit or root; (4) harvesting has its own timetable — the head a foot above ground “must be cut only after a dozen years or more”, in horse-tooth shapes, hence “tooth incense”; (5) in incense-growing households “the women secretly take the best pieces and hide them, calling them daughter incense”, offered to the gods at the festivals — so incense was both an export commodity and an offering; (6) “leaves like the box, not falling in freezing weather” and “seeds like the forsythia but black, falling to the ground they grow; picked by hand, they do not” are first-hand notes on form and propagation — fallen seed germinates, hand-picked seed does not; “the fragrance gathers with time and grows stronger” is a separate clause and must not be joined to “picked by hand, they do not”. This entry records content read by hand from the public-domain scan, set side by side with the gazetteer register: the Hong Kong Chronicles chronology (General Description, Chronology, p. 38) records for the Ming that “this region produced large quantities of agarwood of the Guanxiang variety, also known as daughter incense … and Sha Tin’s Lek Yuen and Sha Lo Wan in western Lantau were sources of quality agarwood” (EV-undated-879), and the Chronicles volume on the territory’s physical setting (p. 234) likewise gives Lek Yuen and Sha Lo Wan as the main producing areas (EV-13680000-03). The place names and the name “daughter incense” match item by item, but the periods differ — the register speaks of the Ming, the gazetteer of conditions in 1819 — so the site sets them side by side rather than treating them as one event, and does not use the gazetteer as a second source for the register. Gaps stated honestly: (1) the three characters of Lei Chung Leng were read from a 1,400 px narrow detail (leng being grass radical over lang) without further enlargement, and no attempt has been made to identify the modern village. (2) Yuen Village was read character by character and is the same village name as in the watermelon entry on page 70 (“the Yuen Village of the county produces the best”), but where it lay is still unchecked and therefore unstated. (3) The punctuation is the site’s; the woodblock has none. (4) The bamboo section that follows (from the end of the upper block of page 73), the lower block of page 73 (folio ten) and pages 74 onwards have not been read; this entry does not touch them. (5) The entry gives no year and no person, so no chronology is inferred, and “a dozen years or more” is not treated as a statistic.
