Notes and definition

InvestHK press release, 13 March 2004: announcing a United States micro-motor maker’s regional headquarters, it explains that “Hong Kong is the world’s largest exporter of toys” and also records that “about half of the world’s toy exports come from Hong Kong” and a Hong Kong toy market “worth up to US$8.1 billion”. These are the words of a 2004 press release — the basis (domestic exports or including re-exports) is not stated — so they are not a yearly statistic and cannot be swapped with the 2007 “second largest” wording (see /calibre).

There is more than one official basis

  • World ranking of Hong Kong’s toy exports

Is Hong Kong the world’s largest toy exporter? An official press release says largest, while two later official speeches say second largest — which applies?

The same question has 3 official bases; their figures and scopes cannot be added together or swapped.
