Charles Richard Alford was the second Bishop of the Diocese of Victoria. The official list of past bishops records his term as 1867 to 1873, while the official history gives 1867 to 1872 elsewhere; the two are reported side by side rather than reconciled here. The history records that the jurisdiction he and his predecessor George Smith held was the widest the Anglican Church had ever had, covering not only China but also Japan, and that when the English missionary society decided to create a separate diocese in north China, Alford resigned because he considered the change a real reduction of his authority. The official pages do not state his years of birth or death.
