Michael Chan Wai-man was born in 1945 in a walled village in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong, and worked at various times as a prison officer and a policeman. He studied Shaolin boxing from the age of twelve and later Western boxing, winning the lightweight title at an invitation boxing tournament of Southeast Asian martial arts in 1971. Because of his fighting skills he was invited into films as a martial-arts actor, his first appearance being in Ho Fan's Blood Love (1972); he went on to appear in further pictures and to serve as action director, and even formed his own company to make a 1974 film. Playing a cold-blooded killer in a 1976 film, he gradually built a reputation for screen assassins, in such films as two pictures of 1978 and 1979, the latter of which he also wrote. In Johnny Mak's The Club (1981) he played the ferocious gangster Ah Sai, which drew attention and became his signature screen image. Throughout his career he appeared in many triad fighting films, drawing on his own background for a convincing realism, his tattoos serving as a personal trademark. Besides killers he appeared in period martial-arts films and occasionally on television, as in a 1978 ATV swordplay series. In 1989 he played a range of underworld figures in three films, showing greater range, and the same year produced and starred in a comedy set against the Japanese yakuza; he later gave warmer, comic treatment to gangster roles. He continued to appear in films into the 2010s, including the Young and Dangerous series, and later crime dramas.
A ring champion turned actor, Chan was known for his genuine fighting skills and tattooed physique, regarded as a real-life triad figure in Hong Kong gangster films. Playing tough killers and bosses in pictures from The Club to Young and Dangerous, he became a signature face of the triad genre in the 1980s and 90s.
