Suet Nei, of Hubei ancestry and originally surnamed Li, was taken to Hong Kong by her maternal grandmother at about two and later entrusted to a couple named Hung, taking the school name Suet Nei before moving to Taiwan with her adoptive parents. Interested in acting as a student, she was admitted in 1961 to the actor training class of the Central Motion Picture Corporation, alongside Chiao Chiao and Tang Pao-yun, and made her screen debut in Zili Film Company's Good Neighbors (1962). Returning to Hong Kong, she was introduced to the Hong Kong Film Company (Sin Hok Kong Luen) and became its first basic contract actor, winning an important role in The Golden Hairpin (1963) and then the lead in the comedy One Queen and Three Kings (1963). Over about four years she made mainly period martial arts films, performing her own stunts with agility and a cool, tough presence that made her a new-generation fight star. Her credits include The Mighty Snow Sword (parts one to four, 1964), Book Without Letters (1965) and Paragon of Sword and Knife (1967–68), while The Green-Eyed Lady (1967) was especially admired. She also built a modern heroine image in the Black Musketeer 'F' films. In the mid-1960s she struck out beyond the studio, continuing in Blood Stains the Iron Fist (1967) and The Dragon Fortress (1968). She married martial arts coordinator Tong Kai in January 1969 and left the industry in the late 1960s. After emigrating to Canada she made a guest appearance in Tsui Hark's The Blade (1995), returned to Hong Kong in 1997 and worked mainly in TV dramas such as Secret of the Heart (1998) and Rosy Business (2009), retiring in 2020. She died on 3 July 2025.

Suet Nei was a leading female fight star of 1960s Cantonese cinema, her agile self-performed stunts and cool, tough screen persona setting her apart in a male-dominated genre. Her Black Musketeer 'F' series blended action with contemporary and suspense elements, broadening the local heroine film. Returning in the 1990s, she shifted to tough mother and elder roles on television, extending a performing career that spanned decades.
