高錕

Charles K. Kao

English

Charles Kao (1933-2018) was born in Shanghai and moved to Hong Kong in 1948, studying at St. Joseph's College. While working at Standard Telecommunication Laboratories in the 1960s, he proved that glass fibres purified of impurities could carry light signals over long distances — the insight that made the internet physically possible. He later served as Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2009 he received the Nobel Prize in Physics, remembered affectionately in Hong Kong as the 'Father of Fibre Optics'.
