Jiaqing gazetteer, “Natural calamities” (Ming stretch): earthquakes, comets, drought, grain prices and epidemics from Jiajing to Chongzhen

The “natural calamities” section of juan 13 in the Jiaqing Xin’an County Gazetteer opens with the Ming dynasty and runs year by year (both leaves of page 177 of the scan, running heads “juan 13, natural calamities”, folios 1 and 2). Its short preface dwells on the fear due to heaven’s changes and on vigilance in advance, and says that “since the county returned within the boundary its people have multiplied” — from the Kangxi restoration down to the crowded Jiaqing years. The upper leaf carries: heavy rain with lightning in the second month of Jiajing 5; a great overflow of flood-water and tide in the fifth month of summer in Jiajing 25; a great drought in the fourth month of summer in Jiajing 43, a peck of rice at one mace and a fraction of silver; an earthquake on the first day of the twelfth month of winter in Longqing 1; a comet in Wanli 6; and a summer-autumn drought in Wanli 11. The lower leaf carries: a great drought in Wanli 24, a peck of rice at one mace six candareens; a “black omen” (heisheng) in Wanli 25; an earthquake on the twenty-second day of the eighth month of autumn in Wanli 31; an earthquake on the third day of the eighth month of autumn in Wanli 33; a comet seen in the east in the ninth month of autumn in Wanli 46; an earthquake on the seventeenth day of the sixth month of summer in Wanli 48; dear rice in the fourth month of summer in Tianqi 4, a peck at one mace five candareens; oyster blood in Chongzhen 2, which the people dared not gather and eat, with an epidemic that year killing many; in the third month of spring in Chongzhen 3 a black omen shaped like a black dog that bewitched women, the magistrate writing a prayer at the city god’s shrine until the prodigy ceased; dear rice in Chongzhen 4; drought in the fourth and fifth months of summer in Chongzhen 9, a peck at one mace six candareens, the county issuing grain to relieve the famine; and in Chongzhen 16 a typhoon on the twenty-fourth day of the fourth month with heavy rain that uprooted trees, wrecked houses and sank many boats. The gazetteer prints “Chongzheng” for Chongzhen and the text is reproduced as printed; “black omen” is an old term for a prodigy and is left unexplained; names and numbers are copied exactly as printed. This content fact was read by hand from the public-domain scan and sits alongside the Chronicles archive, whose entries for 1526 (Jiajing 5, frequent thunder and lightning with much rain), 1546 (Jiajing 25, a severe flood that fifth month), 1567 (Longqing 1, an earthquake in Dongguan on the first day of the twelfth month), 1578 (Wanli 6, a comet observed in Xin’an County), 1624 (Tianqi 4, a peck of rice at one mace five candareens in Xin’an County) and 1629 (Chongzhen 2, an epidemic that killed many) match the gazetteer item by item. For 1620 (Wanli 48) the archive has “the sixteenth day of the seventh month” where the gazetteer prints “the seventeenth day of the sixth month of summer”; this site reproduces the gazetteer and keeps the difference. The 1605 (Wanli 33) earthquake in the archive is placed in Qiongzhou (Hainan) and is not paired with the same year’s earthquake in the gazetteer. The gazetteer prints reign years and lunar dates only, so this site never converts them into Gregorian dates, and grain prices are never used as statistics.
