The “banditry” section of juan 13 in the Jiaqing Xin’an County Gazetteer records military events reign by reign (starting on the lower half of the lower leaf of page 179 of the scan and continuing on pages 180 and 182); its opening Ming entries read: in the sixth year of Hongwu, foreigners raided Dongguan and the chiliarch Yuan Guang died hunting them down at Cenzi Ao; in the eleventh year of Zhengde, foreigners of the Folangji raided and occupied the Tun Mun sea, and the naval commissioner Wang Hong moved against them; and in the twelfth year of Jiajing, the sea bandits Xu Zhegui and Wen Zongshan raided Dongguan (continuing on page 180 of the scan). This content fact was read by hand from the public-domain scan and sits alongside the Chronicles archive, which records that in the eleventh year of Zhengde (1516) the Folangji invaded and occupied the Tun Mun sea, that from 1514 the Portuguese — called Folangji at the time — held Tun Mun for about seven years, and that in 1521 Wang Hong, the Guangdong naval commissioner, led a flotilla against the Portuguese ships near Tun Mun (the Battle of Tun Mun); the gazetteer’s phrase “the naval commissioner Wang Hong moved against them” answers to the last of these. The gazetteer prints reign years only, so this site never converts them into Gregorian years, and place names such as Cenzi Ao are reproduced as printed rather than identified with a present-day location.
